North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
July 7, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE & SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY< FLAMINGO & OFFSHORE with CApt. Ala Sherman

Time for a fishing update! It has been a few weeks since my last report and that is due to a well deserved family vacation and then a week of maintenance on my boat and last getting my daughter settled in at Florida State University for the summer program. But now it’s back to fishing and just in time!

With summer patterns now in place it is very important to fish early or late in the day and avoid the hottest part of the day, mid afternoon. The only exception to that fishing philosophy is in the offshore fishing where you can target dolphin by slow trolling and creating a nice breeze of your own until you hit fish or by fishing Flamingo and fishing the trap buoys and pilings for tripletail and cobia. These fish seem less disturbed by the hotter temperatures. On my local trips to North Biscayne Bay and South Biscayne Bay I have tried to be on the water by 7am and off by 11am and then on again by 4pm and off by 8pm. During these time spans we have had some very good trips. The hard rains recently have pushed snook out of the canals and made them easier targets during the daytime. Recently some quality schools of baitfish have returned to the bay and that has given us a choice bait to present to the snook, barracuda and tarpon. Days that have been overcast have allowed us to fish throughout the day with steady action even into the afternoons.

Recent trips have included Stanley Angel his son Eric and Eric’s son Chris fishing a 4-hour morning trip just offshore of Haulover Inlet. They had plenty of hits by king mackerel that either cut through the leaders or shook hooks at the boat. They did manage to land a 12 lb. king and half of a bonito that a 25 lb. barracuda ate. We were able to free gaff the cuda and then released him alive. On an afternoon trip my clients landed 2 kings in the 6 lb. class and missed another four or five fish. They landed and released a 20 lb. barracuda and over a dozen small dolphins. Jim Weber and friends had numerous shots at small tarpon that ignored our baits but did manage to land 6-pound jack crevalles after loosing 2 that were in the 10-pound range in Dunfoundling Bay. Robert and Stanley Wallman fishing in Key Biscayne caught over 10 yellow jacks up to 14 lbs. plus a 12 lb. shark and many small mangrove snappers and yellowtail snappers. They lost close to 8 barracuda that short struck their baits. George Marikos his wife Doreen and friends teamed up to land 10 snook, 5 tripletail, many jack crevalles and ladyfish had shots at 2 cobias and hooked and lost 3 giant Goliath groupers that broke their lines, released 2 big nurse sharks and fought an estimated 100 lb. sawfish for forty minutes only to be able to touch the leader but not bring the fish to the surface before the sawfish broke the 10 lb. line in Flamingo. Jerry Chaves and his 8 yr. Old grandson Spencer teamed up to catch and release 3 snook to 6 lbs. with Spencer catching the biggest on his own plus jack crevalles to 6 lbs. and barracudas to 10 lbs. on a half day trip in North Biscayne Bay.
