North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
September 16, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY, SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY, OFFSHORE and FLAMINGO

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Get your gear ready and pick up the phone and give me a call. For the next 2 months we can expect some of the best fishing of the year to take place. Our first cold front slid through South Florida last night and left us with a light NE wind which is what it takes to get the baitfish and then the predators to start moving south. Tropical storm Ernesto limped past South Florida over a week ago and it also gave us a strong NE wind for a couple of days. That is all it took to move giant schools of Spanish sardines and mullet into the South Florida area. Yesterday I threw my cast net twice. Once in North Biscayne Bay filling one live well full of 2 to 3 inch threadfin herring. Those baits got us three strikes. 1 by a 5 lb. barracuda and 2 other strikes by tarpon that we landed took pictures of and released. With very little wind we headed out along the beach where we ran into a huge school of 4-inch Spanish sardines. I couldn’t help myself because I had an empty live well so I threw the net once again filling that well and topping off the other well. Moving offshore in 40 feet of water we threw a handful of bait out for chum and started fishing. The first hit was by a 16-inch mutton snapper that came off the bottom to eat the free-lined sardine on light tackle. After missing several king and mackerel bites we landed a small yellowtail snapper and a bluerunner. We made three more drifts in the area losing over a dozen kings and mackerel but landing 2 undersized kings a keeper 6 pounder and another around 8 or 9 pounds plus a 2-pound cero mackerel before I came down with a bad case of sun poisoning. Yes even a seasoned Capt. can get a touch of sun poisoning. Not being able to stabilize myself we came in early. I’m fine now but that is just a reminder to make sure you stay fully hydrated while out on the water. We witnessed many sky rocketing kings as big as 15 pounds in the area we were fishing plus many schools of baitfish that were being attacked by the kings.

Every day for the next 2 months until the water temperature drop into the high 60’s we can expect fishing like this but even better. These baitfish schools will move into the bay and the predators will follow them. During the windier days we will fish North Biscayne Bay where we can stay in fairly calm waters catch snook, tarpon, Spanish and king mackerel, bluefish, large and small jack crevalles, ladyfish, speckled sea trout, barracuda, sharks, mangrove snapper and gag grouper and on the calmer days for those that like ocean fishing we will target larger king mackerel, Spanish and cero mackerel, bonito, dolphin, tuna, snapper, grouper and jacks. As the baitfish schools travel south Flamingo fishing will go nuts with plenty of snook, tarpon, redfish and sharks on the flats and finger channels. This fishing will be very dependable as long as water temperatures stay in the upper 70’s after that we will be loading up on non-stop Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, ladyfish, sea trout and pompano action plus sharks, cobias and tripletail for added measures. If the weather turns cold on us and you don’t want to drive to Flamingo to meet me then we can fish closer in South Biscayne Bay in the finger channels for mutton snapper, grouper, pompano, bluefish, sharks, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel and mangrove snapper.

Last year we had great fishing from the middle of Sept. right into the New Year with the only slow fishing or no fishing around Hurricane Wilma.

So don’t hesitate give me a call or send me an E-Mail and secure your next fishing trip while the fish are here and biting.
