North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 3, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH & SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY, OFFSHORE and FLAMINGO with Capt. Alan Sherman

Happy New Year to all of you fishing people out there! 2006 went out not like 2007 came in. Last year we had calm weather in late December and early January and much cooler temperatures. That weather pattern had us catching loads of Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and other migratory fish very close to shore but this year has been so different. Water temperatures last year in January were in the 60’s and even as low as the 50’s at one time around January 20th. This year water temperatures are in the mid 70’s and it doesn’t look like its going to change anytime soon. Because of the warmer temperatures our migratory fish are not as thick in Miami as we would like but our residential fish are. Lots of sea trout are available in North Biscayne Bay and a few snook and tarpon can be caught as well. Off shore lots of sailfish have been hitting but the wind has kept me from being able to take advantage of them. Small king mackerel are in about 80- feet of water just outside of Government Cut but once again it has been just a little too windy to take advantage of them. Fishing in the Finger Channels has been good but now the warmer water has slowed that fishing down. We were catching snapper, grouper, jacks, sharks, pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel and that fishing should turn on once again as the water cools on the next major cold front. Best fishing for my clients has been out of Flamingo where we have been catching snook, redfish, tarpon, sea trout, bluefish, jacks, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, pompano, snapper and tripletail.
