North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 13, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH & South Biscayne Bay, Offshore & Flamingo with,

Capt. Alan Sherman

Time for a fishing update! With the Holidays behind us things have slowed just enough for me to do some minor maintenance on my boat and trailer and a tune up on my Yamaha 200 HPDI outboard engine. The guys at Bob Hewes Boats in Miami were quick to get everything back in order after charters everyday for three weeks. My Minn Kota 36 volt trolling motor had been short on power and the guys at Master Repair in Stuart were quick to find one of my 12 volt batteries on the dead side and replaced the battery with a new one and now the quick strong power my 101 thrust trolling motor had is back.

Since my last report I have fished North Biscayne Bay inshore, South Biscayne Bay in the Finger Channels, offshore and Flamingo in Everglades National Park. With the unusual warm weather conditions fishing has been slow compared with last years fishing this time of the year except in Flamingo. Locally the fish just seem confused because water temperature had been as high as 77 degrees in the Bay. Lots of sea trout, a few jack crevalles, an occasional gag grouper and snook but not much else in North Biscayne Bay. Spanish mackerel have been hit and miss and offshore it has just been too rough to do anything. In South Biscayne Bay we had good grouper and snapper action in the channels but as the water warmed the fish moved back into the ocean. We did have steady action on mackerel and one day had a few pompano. In Flamingo with warm conditions snook and redfish plus sea trout, jacks and ladyfish were available on the outgoing tide around the flats with some nice tarpon action as well. Out in the Gulf mackerel fishing was non stop as long as the tide was running and a few pompano, bluefish, tripletail, lane, mangrove and small mutton snapper as well as ladyfish, jack crevalles, bluerunners and sharks made up the remainder of the catch. Weather conditions have cooled with a cold front during the early part of the week and then a strong cool northeasterly and east winds since have water temperatures dropping again. A strong front may make it into South Florida by the end of next week and that can only help fishing locally. Right now I have scattered openings for the next couple of months so give me a call and let’s set up a fishing charter.
