North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
March 21, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

March has hit us with the expected wind that one expects this time of the year but always hope won’t come. Each March my phone rings off the wall with possible charters and then actual bookings. Unfortunately because of the windy weather we get in March and April some of my bookings are afraid that the water will be too rough to fish or the fish won’t be biting and decide to cancel their trips which makes things difficult for fishing guides like me because a day not on the water is a day without pay. Most charter captains would rather reschedule a charter because of weather so they don’t loose the client and I too never want to take a client out in conditions that are not safe or might be unbearable for all. That is why I am an inshore light tackle guide. The areas that I fish almost always have an area that can be fished safely and comfortably. My 22-foot Pathfinder Bay boat is built for just these kinds of weather conditions.

North Biscayne Bay has a lot of wind protected areas that I have been targeting for the past few weeks and scoring as many as 30 sea trout to three pounds during a ½ day trip. Along with the trout we have been catching jack crevalles to 11 pounds, snook to 26 inches, barracuda, snapper, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel and a few bluefish. So far we have not caught any pompano recently but that should change any day and all of this action has taken place during the day.

In South Biscayne bay the finger channels always have something that can be targeted but fishing in the channels this year has not been as good as it was last year due mainly to the warmer weather conditions that we have been experiencing.

Fishing in Flamingo has been outstanding with plenty of snook of all sizes, redfish, tarpon, sea trout, ladyfish, cobia, mackerel, snapper, bluefish, gag grouper and goliath grouper with almost all of this action taken place in protected bays and creeks in Whitewater Bay and Shark River.

So don’t let the wind cheat you out of a fishing adventure of a lifetime. Give me a call at 786-436-2064 or send me an e-mail at [email protected]

Recent Catches: David Solomon and his fishing buddy Joshua Friedman from New York scored on snook to 26 inches, jack crevalles to 11 pounds and had shots at bluefish, ladyfish and barracudas while fishing a ½ day trip in North Biscayne Bay. Winds blew at 15 to 20 all day. Tom Karlson of Miami Shores and his dad Richard from Chicago caught snook, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalles, snapper and over 20 sea trout to three pounds in North Biscayne Bay during a ½ day charter. Winds blew at 15 o 20 all day. Mike Donaldson from New York scored a backcountry slam by catching snook, redfish and sea trout. Over a dozen snook, two redfish, two sea trout, mangrove snapper and lots of ladyfish were caught on artificial lures in winds as strong as 25 miles per hour during a full day in Flamingo. Gene Clasby and his brother Frank caught snook, jack crevalles, mangrove snappers and over a dozen sea trout to two pounds during a windy ½ day in North Biscayne Bay. Fishing on a day off in Flamingo with my wife Dana and my son Zachary each of us caught a backcountry slam with Dana catching six redfish and a couple of snook and many sea trout, Zachary catching a snook, two redfish and plenty of sea trout to three pounds plus a bluefish that ate the tail off of a trout and myself catching two redfish, plenty of trout to three pounds a 28 inch snook and loosing a tarpon in the 40 pound range after a couple of jumps. Lots of jacks, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel were caught as well. All of these fish were caught on Rapala Twitchin Raps and Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp shrimp. Zachary also caught a 24-pound goliath grouper on a live threadfin herring.
