North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 16, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Time for a fishing update! What a crazy couple of weeks that have just gone by. Great fishing, lots of wind and a few wet and cold days in between but that did not keep my clients from having great trips in Flamingo, North Biscayne Bay and offshore.

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been steady with good catches of sea trout from ½ pounders to 3 pound fish. Most of the bigger fish are females that are starting to spawn. I have not seen the 4 to 5 pound fish that we usually see in April but it appears by the fishing and weather conditions we are experiencing that everything is about a month behind schedule. On the warmer days we have caught at least one snook a day and we are still catching Spanish mackerel in the bay. Snapper, ladyfish, barracuda and some large jack crevalles up to 16 ½ pounds have been caught recently. We are starting to see tarpon in the bay once again and tarpon have been available at Government Cut. At night we have had some good action on snook as well. Offshore on the few days that I have been able to go offshore due to the high winds we have caught a few kingfish an estimated 60 pound sailfish that took 5 hours to catch and release plus a fantastic day just a few days ago that had my clients catching 2 – 10 fish limits on dolphin in the 5 to 12 pound range. Fishing in Flamingo has been decent but the weather has made things unpredictable. On days that we have had windy but stable weather conditions we have found a good number of snook and redfish plus goliath groupers, jacks and ladyfish with a few sea trout mixed in in Whitewater Bay and Shark River. Then in Florida Bay just the other day we in very windy conditions we managed to catch snook to 26 inches, black drum, loads of sea trout as big as 4 pounds on Skitter Walks and an assortment of artificial lures plus all the jacks, ladyfish and a few big sharks that one might want. I expect the fishing to get only better as Spring really kicks in so if you haven’t been fishing in a while give me a call and lets set up a fishing adventure of your lifetime.

Recent Catches: Robert and Linda Burkert fishing a half day trip in North Biscayne Bay and caught Spanish mackerel and sea trout to 4 pounds. Norman and Jordan Ditchek fishing North Biscayne Bay caught 22 trout, 1 king mackerel, 1 black grouper and mangrove snapper during a full day charter. Jim and Sandra Therault fishing a ½ day charter in North Biscayne Bay and caught 1 snook, 2 Spanish mackerel, 1 barracuda and 15 sea trout. Steve and Jerry Fill fishing a ½ day trip in North Biscayne Bay caught 1 snook, a 12 pound jack crevalles and 25 sea trout to 3 pounds. Bill Simpson and his daughter Sarah fishing in North Biscayne Bay and Offshore during a half day charter landed 1 kingfish and over a dozen sea trout. Norman Ditchek his son Jordan and cousin Joey fishing a late afternoon into the evening caught a dozen sea trout, ladyfish, a 32” cobia, and went 2 for 8 on snook while fishing in North Biscayne Bay. Rich More and his buddy Al Lewis fishing a full day trip that started in North Biscayne Bay but ended in the ocean had the two catching 1 kingfish out of 6 kingfish strikes then Al hooked a sailfish that required 5 hours to land and release on 12 pound spin. Joel Dokson and his buddies Steve and Armando fishing a ¾ day on a Saturday in North Biscayne Bay and struggled to catch anything in the bay. They missed many opportunities at Spanish mackerel landing one small one and released a dozen small sea trout. Dale De Lissa and his son Tristan teamed up o land a 16 ½ pound jack crevalles on 8 pound line plus sea trout and a snook during a ½ day charter in North Biscayne Bay. Bob and Chris Brick struggled during a full day charter in Flamingo fishing the backcountry and Ponce De Leon Bay. They caught a few sea trout, ladyfish and jack crevalles plus some very large catfish. A very strong rainstorm hit the evening before bringing lots of rain and dirty water to the area. Jeff Guvins and his sons Chris and Nick teamed up to catch jack crevalles of 8 pounds and 12 pounds plus some smaller jacks, 2 Spanish mackerel and a dozen sea trout to 2 pounds during a ½ day charter ion North Biscayne Bay. Terry Morejon and her fishing buddy Edgar fishing a full day charter that started in North Biscayne Bay but ended up in the ocean caught over 20 dolphin to 12 pounds on live pilchards and Skitter Walk plugs plus two king mackerel and a 27 inch snook. Jeff Daskin and his buddy Scott fishing a full day in Flamingo in Florida Bay teamed up o catch a 26 inch snook, a 4 pound black drum on an artificial lure, jack crevalles, ladyfish, dozens of sea trout to 4 pounds, a mutton snapper and a 100 pound lemon shark. All of the fish except the shark were caught on an assortment of artificial lures like the Rapala Skitter Walk, Twitchin Rap and Hook Up lures with Gulp Shrimp.
