North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 30, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

May is just around the corner and still no rain. Up until the other day the wind had been st4eady at 15 to 2o but finally it has calmed down. During the windy days we had a few calm ones and managed to get offshore a time or two but mostly fished around and through the wind. Things are starting to shape up and it looks like besides everything being a few weeks behind we are in for some outstanding fishing for the next few months.

Sea trout are still the number one fish in the North part of the bay with fish as big as 4 ˝ pounds being caught. Mixed in with the trout have been a few ladyfish, jacks, snapper, an occasional snook and plenty of barracudas. There are plenty of pilchards, Spanish sardines and threadfin herring in North Bay but they have been moving around a bit. I have seen some very large tarpon in the Bay and it is just a matter of time before one of my clients hooks a tarpon on tackle intended for a sea trout. When this happens we usually loose the fish after a few jumps or long runs but on occasion we do get lucky and the light tackle gets the fish top boatside for a picture or two.

Offshore kingfish have been moving north and when we have had a chance to fish offshore we have landed a few. Sailfish continue to be available. Dolphins have been in good numbers and some a quite large.

Flamingo has been pretty good on days when the weather has not been too bad. Recently we have caught some large snook, jacks, ladyfish, sea trout and sharks on live baits and artificial lures.

Recent Catches: Fishing North Biscayne Bay and offshore Jack Dresner caught 2 kingfish, 1 Spanish mackerel, jacks, ladyfish, snapper and a snook on live pilchards and artificial lures. On a group charter in Miami I had Jim, Peter and Paul aboard and after trying our luck for tarpon we came back in the bay and fished the flats for sea trout were we caught fish up to 4 ˝ pounds. Bill Simpson and his buddy Alan teamed up to catch ladyfish and 3 dozen sea trout up to 20 inches on artificial lures in North Biscayne Bay. Mel and Mickey Tredeau fished North Biscayne Bay and offshore and caught king mackerel to 10 pounds and mutton snappers of 4 and 5 pounds then we went looking for dolphins and although we found fish under a sea turtle with at least one fish in the 20 pound range the fish refused everything we threw at them. Irwin Friedman fishing North Biscayne Bay caught all the sea trout he could handle on live pilchards under a Cajun Thunder. Valerio Forte and a friend teamed up to catch sea trout, jack cr4evalles and small barracuda while fishing in North Biscayne Bay. Jerry Chaves and Tommy Singer fishing on a windy day in Flamingo caught 3 snook of 27”s, 31 inches and 34”s with the biggest fish weighing in at 13.5 pounds. They also caught loads of sea trout, small jacks, bluefish and ladyfish. The larger snook was caught on a live pilchard that was intended for one of many tarpon that weighed close to 100 pounds that were crashing baits right next to the boat.

Well that catches me up for the moment. Give me a call and lets set up your next fishing adventure.
