Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Before I start my fishing report I want to take a minute and mention something that will be taking place in the near future. The Everglades National Park’s General Management Plan will be holding work shops to talk about changes that may be made in the near future that may make major changes in how we the public are allowed to use many of the parks resources. If you ever plan on visiting or using any part of The Everglades National Park it will be in your best interest to attend at least one of these meetings to hear or respond to the changes that may take place. As a fishermen and a guide that uses the parks waters I for one am very concerned about a change that may become law that may make Snake Bight off limits to anyone using a combustible engine. Other possibilities are making any waters that have a depth of three feet or less off limits unless you paddle, pole or use an electric motor. Another would allow only boats 24 feet or less. These are only a few of the changes proposed but these particularly make me feel uneasy. At my age I do not look forward to having to down size to a canoe or kayak or pole a 22’ foot boat into and out of an area that I want to fish. Yes I understand that we all want to protect the sea grasses in every body of water but is this the best way. Wouldn’t education and better channel markings make better sense? Florida Bay has gone through a lot of hardships over the years, commercial fishing(outlawed), hurricanes, severe cold snaps, prop channels, pollution, lost of habitat and algae but somehow through all of this it still shows positive signs of fixing itself. Yes we can help but in doing so must we make it impossible for some or all of the people to continue to use the park in a responsible way. Check out these dates and locations and see if one might fit your busy schedule. Each site will have 2 presentations with the first starting at 5PM – 6:30 PM the again at 6:30 PM till 8PM

Time for an updated fishing report! As you know we have been experiencing some of the strangest weather patterns of recent time. We have had a very warm winter, drought, cold fronts in April that actually were as cold as a front in Feb, or March, fires up and down the state, west winds that lasted for almost 2 weeks bringing with it smoke filled air and now winds from the east that are blowing at 20 to 25 knots. Time to stick our heads under a rock and hide? Maybe not just yet! Probably just a cycle that is getting ready to start anew.
As far as the fishing business is concerned what has all this meant to my clients and me? Well we have had to adjust. The fish are as confused as we are. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been only so so. Lots of sea trout have been available with many over 18 inches a few jack crevalles in the 10 pound range and some in the 5 pound range, quite a few barracudas under 10 pounds, small kingfish and Spanish mackerel a few tarpon but no snook. Offshore there have been scattered kingfish, bonitos, sailfish, blackfin tuna and quite a few Mahi Mahi or dolphins with fish way over 50 pounds. Flamingo has had great fishing for snook for catch and release, redfish, large sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and plenty of sharks. Sounds pretty good right? Well it is as long as you are in the right place at the right time. On some of my charters we had weather conditions that had us start our trip in the bay and then run offshore as far as 1000 feet of water looking for dolphins. On some trips we scored big on the dolphins on others we either didn’t go out far enough or went too far only to find that the fish were passing by in 200 feet instead of 1000 feet of water. On any of these trips had we stayed in the bay we most certainly would have caught as many sea trout as one wanted but when the opportunity presents itself to get offshore in a bay boat it is hard to turn it down.
For the past month or so I have had to cancel or reschedule many of many charters due to high smoke, rain and winds. Not easy to earn a living when this takes place but it is part of the business. Mother nature is always looking over your shoulder as she kicks you in the butt. Being a family man first a Captain second and a fishermen third I did what any other fishermen would do, take my son fishing on the days that clients canceled or rescheduled that were actually fishable and that is what I did.
Recent Catches:
Jose & Joseph Venedi fishing an afternoon trip caught lots of sea trout to 3 pounds in North Biscayne Bay.
Donald Kaplan and his nephew fishing a morning trip fished offshore with 0 luck before heading into North Biscayne Bay where they caught sea trout to 2 ˝ pounds.
Fishing in the afternoon in North Biscayne Bay Robert , Matt & Kevin missed a large tarpon, lost jack crevalles to 10 pounds landing a few in the 6 pound range, Spanish mackerel, barracudas and sea trout to 3 1/2 pounds.
Zachary Sherman and I had a field day in Flamingo catching 3 out of 7 snook to 31 inches with fish bigger being lost on Hook Up lures and plastic shrimp tails and Skitter Walks, 9 redfish to 25 inches, 2 dozen sea trout to 22 inches, jack crevalles, ladyfish, mangrove snapper and lost a huge shark on 8 lb. spin.
Zachary and I fished out of Haulover Inlet in seas that were 3 to 4 feet in the beginning of the trip but as big as 6 feet at the end. We caught 9 dolphins to 22 pounds with a 14 pounder, 17 pounder and 6 fish between 6 and 7 pounds. We lost a dolphin over 20 pounds when an Ambassedeur 7000 reel malfunctioned. The biggest fish was caught on 10-pound spin.
Dr. Kasin and his son in law fishing a half-day in North Biscayne Bay caught and released mackerel, jacks, barracudas and over 2 dozen sea trout to 3 pounds.
Jerry Cohen and his son in law Chuck and Chuck’s sons Thomas and Jeff went offshore in search of kingfish and tunas and missed three strikes then ran out to 800 feet of water in search of dolphins with no luck then fished North Biscayne Bay and caught 6 sea trout to 3 pounds. Later in the day I was told that the dolphin were in 1200 feet of water. Oh Well!
