North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

I think we can safely say that the rainy season has started and now I expect our residential fish to start acting normally once again. For the last couple of weeks we have had a considerable amount of rain and our freshwater levels have started to rise. I took a pleasure trip with my son Zach just before the rains started and fishing from shorelines in North Broward we released a half dozen peacock bass to four pounds and then over 30 largemouth bass to 5 pounds using artificial lures. All on Rapala Twitchin Raps and soft plastics. Now back to the saltwater scene. North Biscayne Bay has had plenty of sea trout with some over 5 pounds. Jack crevalles have been chasing the remainder of the baitfish schools that have baits that are larger then 3 inches. Loads of baby pilchards, threadfin herring and glass minnows have moved into the bay and small snappers, small bluerunners, jacks, ladyfish and barracuda are feeding on them. Yesterday we had a few shots at small snook and while trying to cast net bait I accidentally netted a 1-pound snapper and a 6-pound snook on the same throw. All released! We threw artificial baits in the area but only had barracuda hits. Offshore lots of dolphin have been migrating north and south in depths from 200 feet out to 1000 feet of water. The larger dolphin have been swimming south against the Gulf Stream or north current and the schoolies have been going north with the current. Flamingo continues to be the hot spot for inshore fishing and it does require a decent ride by car to get to the boat ramp but the ride has been worth it. Quite a few snook for catch and release with many of the fish being over 10 pounds and eating artificial lures plus redfish to 29 inches, jacks, snapper, ladyfish and large sharks. The snook and redfish action will only get better as the snook spawning season kicks in. Mosquitoes have showed up and by wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants and then applying a mosquito repellent before getting out of your car and then again as you return to the dock you can keep the insect bites to a minimum. I have been scheduling most of my trips to Flamingo to take advantage of the hot fishing.
Because of the warmer late mornings and early afternoons I have been fishing early morning ˝ day North Biscayne Bay charters starting at 7 AM and returning by 11 AM and then also fishing late afternoon charters starting at 4, 5 or 6 PM and fishing into dark to take advantage of the cooler parts of the day. The late afternoon charters are very popular because by going out at 6 PM you can fish the last few hours of daylight for sea trout, jacks and ladyfish and the when the sun sets target snook and tarpon. For those that the heat does not bother I will fish full 8-hour trips as well and Flamingo charters are all 8 hr. trips. Flamingo always has an area that the fish will cooperate no matter how warm it gets.
I have open dates for the next few months and the Flamingo fishing will stay strong right into October.
