North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It’s that time of the year when things start to heat up and I’m not just talking the temperature but the fishing as well. South Florida inshore fishing has taken a turn for the better and that is not unusual for early summer or for the whole summer in general. Now don’t get me wrong it still isn’t a given that you can pick a day and a time and head out and have that special trip of a lifetime but if things work in your favor a trip of a lifetime is what you may get. Fishing recently for snook, tarpon, redfish and sea trout in North Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay and along the shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico has resulted in some banner trips for snook, redfish and small tarpon. As I said it is not a for sure thing because conditions always play a huge part in the end result of the day. The conditions that I am talking about are rainsqualls, stormy windy weather, bugs and unforeseen factors that make fishing what it is and that is fishing not catching. Get some of these things in your favor and you maybe on your way to a catch of a lifetime.
Fishing in North Biscayne Bay is an early morning, late afternoon or early evening adventure. Water and outside temperature are just too hot now to fish an entire 8 hour day in this area with the exception of getting offshore where we might target dolphin. Otherwise starting the day at 7 AM and ending at 11 AM is best for sea trout, tarpon and snook for catch and release. Most of this action is achieved with artificial lures. My favorite this time of the year is a trip that starts at 6PM and ends at 10PM. Fishing the last 2 hours of the afternoon is a good time to get sea trout, snook and tarpon plus jacks, ladyfish, snapper and barracudas on plug and live baits. Quality live baits like pilchards move out into the ocean in the summer and are not always available to us in the summer. As the sun sets we turn our attentions to snook and small tarpon. This fishing can be frustrating because the fish hold around dock and bridge lights and if a homeowner doesn’t turn his light on the fish won’t be there and you have to move on. Same goes for bridge lights if the bridge light is broken or burnt out no fish in that spot. Most nights at least a few lights are available and holding fish. Best to avoid Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights to avoid the fishermen that are targeting the same spots.
Flamingo is my favorite this time of the year and can be fished for a full 8-hour day. It can get very hot on the water in Flamingo and so important to drink plenty of liquids before getting on the water and then throughout the trip. Snook are spawning and can be caught for catch and release and at times are easy to catch and on the larger side. Redfish don’t seem to mind the heat and it is possible to hit schools of fish that seem endless. Tarpon are available but they are tarpon meaning to get one on the hook can be an all day adventure. Sea trout are over the grass flats on the higher stages of the tides along with jacks, ladyfish and mangrove snapper. And then there are the sharks. If you like a strong fish on the end of the line then Flamingo sharks won’t disappoint you.
So there you go, pick a location a time and lets see what we can come up with on the South Florida waters.
I have scattered open dates for the next few months so give me shout and lets set up your next fishing trip of a lifetime.
RECENT CATCHES:
Martin Engels fishing in North Biscayne Bay during a 6 to 10 Pm trip caught sea trout, barracudas, 7 snook to 7 pounds and went 1 for 4 on tarpon to 60 pounds.
Tighe Shommer fishing in Flamingo allowed me to fish along side him and together we caught and released over 30 redfish & snook plus snapper, jacks and ladyfish all on artificial lures.
Mike Bonner fishing in Flamingo caught and released snook to 8 pounds, redfish to 24 inches, snapper, jacks, ladyfish and had a shot at a 20 pound goliath grouper that was sitting along a bank in less then 2 feet of water. He also landed 2 sharks to 60 pounds.
Norman and Jordan Dietchek fishing a 7:30 to 11:30 AM trip in North Biscayne Bay struggled to find bait but we did manage to accidentally cast net a 6 pound snook and 1 pound mangrove snapper that we released. They caught snapper and barracuda.
Tom and Jennifer Reeves fishing in Flamingo during an all day rainy day started off the ay with Jennifer catching 2 snook to 7 ½ pounds and then finished the day off with lots of ladyfish, jacks, catfish and sea trout. They also had a large shark on for a quick run before the line broke.
Brian Morrellaer and his buddies JT and Bruce fishing in Flamingo teamed up o catch 3 out of 8 snook hooked to 36 inches (12 pounds), 5 redfish to 8 pounds (29 inches) plus jacks, ladyfish and sea trout.
My son Zach and I fished a day in Flamingo and caught 3 out of 7 snook hooked, 9 redfish, jacks, ladyfish and over a dozen large sea trout while casting artificial lures.
