North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
June 27, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in South Florida has been up and down with the best inshore light tackle fishing taking place in Flamingo were snook, redfish, tripletail, sharks, trout, jacks, ladyfish and other species have been tearing up artificial lures throughout the day. Recent catches have had double-digit catches of snook or redfish or both in one trip and the bugs have not been bad at all. We see tarpon on every trip but have had little luck hooking up on the silver kings. In North Biscayne Bay sea trout are the only species one can count on during the day. Snook and tarpon, an occasional large school of jack crevalles, barracuda, snappers and even some permit have been available in the bay but they have not been consistent at all. Schools of very small baitfish, too small to put on a hook are the only baits that I have seen on recent trips in the bay. The best trip I have had recently in North Biscayne Bay is a late afternoon into the early evening fishing for sea trout, snook, tarpon, barracuda and ladyfish before the sunsets and then for snook, tarpon and snappers after the sunsets. Offshore fishing on days that I have been able to get offshore have had decent catches of dolphins but once again getting enough live baits to take offshore has been a challenge. A special thanks to Capt. Dave Kostyo of the charter boat Knot Nancy for giving out his location and helping not just me but other boaters share his school of dolphins.

Ask a professional guide what time of the year he prefers to fish out of Flamingo and he or she will tell you during the summer months into early fall. The reason is because snook are spawning the waters are calm and clear and redfish are schooled up in big numbers and you can have the park almost entirely to yourself. Add the other species that inhabit Flamingo throughout the summer and for the next four months fishing in Flamingo will be very consistent for snook and redfish with lots of sharks from little guys to over 100 pounds plus tripletail, tarpon, snapper, jacks and ladyfish and right now the bugs are not a problem. Last year the mosquitoes didn’t bother us at all and this year a few are around the boat ramps but not on the water. Bring plenty of water along so you don’t get dehydrated, a hat, a pair of polarized sunglasses, a can of mosquito repellent for when you get out of your car and wear long sleeved cotton shirts and light weight zip off pants and you are ready for a great day at Flamingo. Weather conditions in Flamingo have been good with most of the storms being closer to the east coast then the west coast. A trip starting at 7:30 in the morning and ending at 3:30 in the afternoon has allowed us to get out and in before the late afternoon storms build up over the Glades. During the weekdays only a handful of boaters have been on the water and on the weekends less then half of what you might encounter during the fall and winter.

Give me a call and lets set up a late afternoon or early morning charter in North Biscayne Bay or a full day trip in Flamingo and lets go get some fish!
