North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
July 10, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Florida’s recent hot spell has made an affect in the fish and the fishermen recently. Business for me is off mostly due to unusually slow daytime fishing in North Biscayne Bay the area that I prefer to fish. Because I like to give my clients the best shot at a great fishing experience I have been advising my clients to give Flamingo in Everglades National Park a try. Fishing the park has rewarded my clients with big catches of almost every species you might want to target. Snook have been the most numerous fish to be caught with most fish in the 5 to 10 pound class. These fish have been eating Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp shrimp, Rapala Twitchin Raps and live threadfin herring. We have also had some real good trips with redfish to 9 pounds but the reds have not been as consistent. While casting live threadfin herring in areas that snook are holding we have caught goliath groupers to 20 pounds and broke bigger fish off that we couldn’t stop. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevalles anywhere from 1 pounders to over 10 pounders, mangrove snappers, sea trout, tripletail, permit, cobia and large sharks are some of the species that we have encountered in the past month or so and this fishing will continue right into October. Mosquitoes have not been a problem and the horse flies although around can be controlled by wearing light long pants and long sleeved shirts. Fishing the park requires a considerable drive to get to the boat ramp but the fishing makes it well worth the drive. One way to make the drive a bit easier is to stay at one of many hotels that have been refurbished since Hurricane Katrina and Wilma in Florida City. Either stay there the night before and then drive the one hour ride to the boat ramp at Flamingo or check into the hotel on your way home and then head home in the morning. Or you could do what I do and that is to make the two hour drive both ways
