North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
November 26, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hope Turkey Day was as good for you as it was for me, my family and friends but now its time to work off all of those extra pounds I gained and get back to fishing. The truth of the matter though is that I am normally busy during the Thanksgiving Holiday with charters and taking family members out for a quick fishing adventure before they head back to the places they live and this year was no different then any other. After a few cold fronts water temperatures have dropped a few degrees and many migratory fish have moved into South Florida. Baitfish continue to play cat and mouse with us in North Bay but the live shrimp that I have been buying are real nice in size and there has been enough baitfish schools that I have been able to Sabiki rig or catch with my Lee Fisher Cast Net. I am always asked a question in my business that I can always answer in one way and that question is “when is the best time to fish?” The answer is always the same and quite simple “when you can!” Predicting when the best fishing will take place is an impossible thing to predict. So many variables come into play that it is almost impossible to predict what a fish will do each day. My philosophy has always been the same. Get out on the water and keep an open game plan so you can go with the flow and adjust to what is happening that day. The plan doesn’t always work the way I would like but more times then not it does. North Biscayne Bay is probably the most difficult location I fish. It gets plenty of fishing pressure throughout the week and especially on the weekends. I grew up fishing in this part of the bay and I know it pretty well so I know that if given enough time I will eventually find a worthy fish or a school of fish to bend the rods for a good part of the trip. North Bay’s attraction is that it is close top home or hotels that a lot of my clients live in or are staying. A short drive to the boat ramp from most starting locations and fishing spots are normally within a short 15 minute run. It is a convenient place to fish. The sea trout to 6 pounds is the most numerous fish in North Bay but this time of the year Spanish & king mackerel to 6 pounds, bluefish, tarpon over 100 pounds, snook over 20 pounds, jacks to 15 pounds, bluefish, grouper to 10 pounds, snapper, ladyfish, pompano, sharks, barracudas and others may be available any day for the next 5 months. Almost everyday in North Bay my clients have caught small kingfish, Spanish mackerel from 1 to 5 pounds, bluefish, bluerunners, ladyfish, sea trout, snapper, grouper, jacks and a few snook. No two days have been the sane but neither has the weather and that can definitely make a difference. I have not fished in South Biscayne Bay as of yet this season but I expect the snappers, bluefish, groupers, jacks, mackerel, pompano and porgy’s to be plentiful in the Finger Channels. Flamingo remains the most consistent fishing area but requires a 2 hour drive each way by car. If this is something you can handle the experience is one you won’t forget soon. Loads of migratory birds have flown into the park and low tides around the flats have been a sight to behold. The Lodge in Flamingo is no longer open but there is good lodging in Florida City.
