North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
February 22, 2008
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Nice to see South Florida fishing getting back to normal! Unseasonable warm weather with some rain has sparked a return to the fishing that gets me excited and happy to be a South Florida resident. With water temperatures getting back into the 70’s we have had a return of Spanish mackerel and bluefish in North Biscayne Bay. Scattered schools of baitfish have returned to the bay and have triggered a nice bite of larger sea trout with fish over 20 inches being caught along with snook to 33”s, jacks, ladyfish and barracudas. Some large tarpon have been hanging out with the baitfish schools and eating baits and lures intended for the trout and all of this has happened in the daytime. Fishing in South Biscayne Bay has improved as well. Mackerel and bluefish are scattered in the Finger Channels and have showed up unexpectedly and the small snappers and groupers continue to keep anglers busy as they eat live and dead baits fished on the bottom. Some of these fish have been of legal sizes. Porgies, grunts, barracudas, jacks and ladyfish have been mixed in with the Finger Channel catch. Bonefish and permit have become more dependable on the shallow flats of South Biscayne Bay and although my 22’ Pathfinder is too big to pole the flats we get a shot or two at bonefish and permit when they get too close to a shallow flats edge. Flamingo continues to be the most productive area for anyone interested in meeting me at the boat ramp in Flamingo. Snook that will be in season on the west coast March 1st have been hungry and eating Hook Lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. Redfish, lots of sea trout, jacks and ladyfish are keeping the anglers busy in between snook bites. Some tarpon have been around as well. Gulf waters have been a little muddy due to a lot of south and west winds recently but get a few days of light winds and the Gulf waters will explode with action. Offshore fishing has been pretty good but winds have kept me from sampling some of the good sailfish and dolphins action. If weather conditions continue as they have been expect a long Spring like condition to take place here in South Florida triggering excellent inshore and offshore fishing.

Give me a call when you get the fishing bug and lets see if we can fit you into my fishing calendar.

Recent Catches:

Michael, David and Benjamin Roberts fished an afternoon trip in North Biscayne bay and had trouble hooking most of the mackerel that hit their lines but did manage to get a few plus a 12 ½ pound snook. They were casting live pilchards for bait.

Jerry Chaves and Gerald Miller fished Flamingo and released 56 snook to 28 inches plus redfish, over 30 sea trout and jacks and ladyfish. Most of the fish ate Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp.

Tom Barba Senior, Tom Junior and son Tom fished North Biscayne Bay and caught over 2 dozen sea trout plus some jack crevalles. The trout were eating live shrimp under a Cajun Thunder.

Steve Ziegler his wife Sherri and their son Zach teamed up to catch snook, barracuda, jacks, gag grouper and over 2 dozen sea trout to 21 inches while fishing a 4 hr. morning trip in North Biscayne Bay. Their fish ate live pilchards and shrimp under a Cajun Thunder.

During 2 - ½ day afternoon trips in North Biscayne Bay 6 representatives of Yamaha Outboard Engines fished North Biscayne Bay amongst all of the Boat Show boat testings but still managed to catch a lot of sea trout, jacks, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.

I took a Busman’s Holiday and fished with fellow inshore captain Jorge Valverde in South Biscayne Bay and we each caught a nice bonefish plus some large sharks. I had many opportunities at these skittish fish but either made bad casts or didn’t see the fish in time to make a well presented presentation of my live shrimp. In all we saw over 60 bonefish, a few permit, lots of barracudas and sharks.

Joey and Marcus Schnellenberger and their friend Michael caught a few small groupers, mutton snappers, grunts, houndfish and Spanish mackerel fishing a half day trip in South Biscayne Bay.

I just ordered my new 2008 22ā€™ Pathfinder and should have it in operation in a few months. If you know of anyone looking for a 2005 22’ Pathfinder Tournament Edition that is loaded and in great working condition powered by a Yamaha 2006 HPDI 200 outboard engine that has 2 years left on the warranty have them give me a call and I’d be glad to take them out for a test drive.
