Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Kingfishing and sailfishing have been very good. Mix in plenty of bonito and you have the ingredients for some great rod bending action.
On Monday (3/10), the morning trip was two fathers and their 7 & 8 year old sons. Our first goal was to catch the young anglers some kingfish. At the first location off Haulover, some small kings chopped the baits off behind the gills. A move to the south and starting in 55' got us action on kings in the 6-8 pound class. Each young man caught two kings and around 11:00 am, they turned off and we finished the morning catching bottom critters on the patches. It was constant action for grunts, red grouper, triggerfish, and porkfish, that had the boys wanting to stay longer when it was time to go in.
Monday evening, we answered the question about how is the tarpon action at Government Cut. There were lots of tarpon rolling around before it got dark. After it got dark, they disappeared and we did not experience the sundown bite. We finally found them, although they were scattered over a large area. We caught the first fish we hooked up and the next two threw the hook on their first and second jumps respectively.
Today (3/11) was a fish the big boat trip. We put our first baits in the water at 1:00 pm and fished till 6:15 pm. From the talk on the radio, we didn't miss much action in the morning. The afternoon was action packed. We fished with live pilchards on flatlines and one deep bait. All of our action took place between 85-109 feet from the hotels on Key Biscayne north to the Miami Sea Buoy. It started with a yellowtail snapper. Then the kingfish started biting. We kept two and released three. Next, it was a 4' barracuda caught and released on a kingfish head. Then the sailfish crashed the scene and we caught and released 2 of the 4 fish we had on. Finally, Bill Borkan from Eastern Shores caught and released 1 of the 2 bonito we hooked up. Bill and I will be back out again tomorrow looking for some more great action.
