Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Capt. Dave Kostyo
June 21, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dolphin (mahi-mahi) fishing continues to be EXCELLENT. It has not been necessary to make long runs offshore to find them. On Thursday (6/19), Jeff Finder and his daughter Brittany, who just finished the 7th grade, scheduled a half day of fishing. More good news is that the pilchards are back at Haulover Inlet. They have been difficult to find. Brittany got the hang of using the sabiki rig very quickly and we soon had ample bait.

Running straight out from Haulover, we found terns, petrels, frigate birds, and an excellent weed line just 8 miles out. Putting out the dolphin juniors and trolling about 200 yards gave us almost instant action. The first fish was a single. Back to the birds and this time a small school followed that didn't hang around very long. The third time was the charm. Decent size schoolies on the juniors and loads of fish all around the boat. The action was fast and furious and having 3 to 4 fish hooked up at one time kept Brittany very busy catching fish.

Once the action slowed down, we concentrated on the frigate birds and got our reward. A much larger fish hit the 1/2 ounce red/black junior. Jeff fought the fish and when it got closer to the boat, we saw its actual size. I got the bigger gaff out and when it was all over and done, the fish weighed 34 pounds back at the dock at Spinnaker Marina.

We had enough fish in the box and then started catching and releasing dolphin. Brittany was having a blast and didn't seem to want to stop fishing. Can you blame her? What a great sight watching a father and daughter spending time together and catching fish. I've said it before and I'll say it again "FAMILY FISHING IS FUN!!"

We've all been waiting for this kind of action. Just be aware that it is very easy to over run the fish in our haste to get offshore. Read the signs and fish them. Also, lets remember that there will be lots of boats out on the weekend. If you don't like crowds, then find a way to fish during the week. Use some courtesy when approaching a group of boats. Running right up on top of the group will only put the fish down and not make you any new friends. There are plenty of fish out there and everyone will get their chance. And finally, please remember that it is very easy to get Dolphin Fever and go overboard with the number and size of fish caught. Keep enough for the table and then practice catch and release.

See you out there!!
