Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dolphin fishing has slowed down a bit. One day you find them good, the next they are hard to find, and the third is an OK day. Swordfish continue to be available, you just have to get out there and put in your time like we did last week and got our reward with 1 out of 2 swords and a 5 1/2 foot shark. Summer kingfish are around and bonito make a strong showing on the days when there is a good strong north current.
In the Haulover area, catching bait has required lots of searching. When the dredging for the beach restoration started, the bait left the Inlet. The dredging has been completed, however, the bait has not returned. Even schools of herring in the 15-25 foot area are scarce.
Friday (7/18) was one of those OK dolphin days. Once again, all the bird and fish activity was north of Haulover. We found a pallet wrapped in rope about 8.5 miles out that was loaded with fish. They were a bit shy to feeding at first, but when we hooked the first one, the rest of the school turned on. When the school moved on, we had drifted away from the pallet and its low profile made it very hard to see, so we could not find it again. The next several flocks of birds were over schools of blue runners. Finding another flock of birds put us back on the fish. We got 1 with live bait, two with jigs that got thrown on jumps, and the other live baits we put out were refused. As quickly as the school came up, it disappeared. We ended the morning with 12 dolphin in the 3-7 pound class caught by 3 anglers.
Monday (7/21) fit the hard to find category. We ran to Government Cut to catch bait and then offshore from there. At the second board that we found, we watched 4 wahoo swim by and refuse everything we offered them. Then two 5 pound dolphin swam up and we caught both of them. The cargo netting we found had no fish on it. The boards and piece of a palm tree had no fish. The bamboo had none either and the inner tube with netting and rope did not produce any dolphin. We did catch and release 4 bar jacks on the cargo netting. South of Fowey Light, we found some very good weedlines that stretched for several miles of non productive trolling. Running back inshore and north to the Monument Buoy, we started in 140'. At 127' we watched a very large kingfish skyrocket our herring and knock it off the hook. Next a king cut our mono leader. Then the downrigger hooked up momentarily. Finally, we got two more hits on surface baits that failed to hook up. And that's the way a tough day of fishing ended. Wednesday has got to be a better day.
