Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Three quarters of a day of fishing on Wednesday (7/23) ran the gamut from low to high. Today is Matthew Rubenstein's 19th birthday. His Mom, Patsy, was treating him to a dolphin fishing trip. Also along on the trip were his friends Adriana Fernandez and Calvin Perdue. We started by netting small to medium baits. We ran out as far as 14 miles in search of dolphin. Along the way, we found two large boards that had only filefish and triggerfish on them. We started back in to fish on the reef and found two more boards with the same results. The few birds that we spotted were searching just like we were. Things were looking quite bleak. Then at 7.5 miles SE of Haulover Inlet in 850' of water, we found a pallet. Once again, it only held filefish and triggerfish. The encouraging sign was that there was a large flock of birds to the south of us that was moving north. Just as I was putting out a dolphin junior to troll that way, a school of dolphin swam up to the boat and the fun began. Everyone was constantly hooked up and the school was sticking with us. When the action slowed, we ate lunch before running in to the reef and catching one bonito before it was time to head in and clean the 16 fish that we had in the fish box. Patsy and Adriana are going to team together and fix a great dolphin birthday dinner for Matthew and his friends. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Matthew and good luck when you go into the Army in September.
Captain Dave
