Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Capt. Dave Kostyo
August 3, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

I've just got my computer up and running again after a hard drive crash. I lost all my email addresses and I'm slowly recovering them. I'd like to thank Bruce Newman, my web master, for all his help with this problem. While he was identifying the problem, I was able to go fishing on July 30th.

The trip was of a 12 noon till 12 midnight variety. First order of business was catching bait. We found several schools of bait north of Haulover and two throws of the cast net gave us ample sardines and cigar minnows. We started on the reef in the Twin Towers area with no results. Next we ran offshore a bit and came upon a large board in 790'. Putting out the live bait netted us strikes from dolphin each time we slow trolled by the board. If we drifted by, we got no strikes. Before moving on, we caught 3 schoolies, a 28# bull dolphin, and missed the hook up on several other schoolies. Looking for variety, we ran back in to the reef area off the sea buoy. We still had no strikes. Next, I moved south to the area outside of the Cuban Hole. We struck pay dirt. Every drift we made resulted in a strike in the 90 - 110 foot area and on the downrigger (using Cajun Red Lightnin' line). This is the time of year when the downrigger or deep bait shines. Before heading offshore to swordfish, we added 3 out of 4 kingfish in the 10 - 17 pound class to the fish box and kept 1 of the 2 bonito we caught.

The calm water conditions made for a pleasant run offshore to swordfish. After setting out all the baits (squid and bluerunners), we settled back and waited and waited and waited. We had a variety of bait come up to our Hydro Glow Fish Light. We had some great conversation and the sandwiches we ate were delicious. The waiting continued and at 11:15 pm we decided to call it a night. The bluerunner was still very lively and the squids were unmolested. It didn't happen on this night, however, we're all looking forward to our next sword trip.

The weather is heating up, but by fishing early, late afternoon, or night, you'll improve your chances for a good catch. I've got openings, so give me a call and lets get out and catch some fish.
