Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 29, 2003

We've gotten to that time of year again when it is time to start fishing on the big (Bill Time) boat again. Bill Borkan was excited about being able to get out and fish the water's off Miami Beach again.

Heading south from Haulover Inlet, we checked out all the bait spots along the way to Government Cut. We caught one bluerunner. Even the range markers at Government weren't holding any bait. It is very rare that bait can't be found somewhere along the line, however, today was just one of those rare days. With the one bait in the live well, we headed offshore with the plan of trolling dolphin juniors to try and find some dolphin. We found lots of petrels working close to the surface in the 300 - 350 range over some very good weed lines. Every time we got close to the birds, we hooked up on from 1 to 3 dolphin at a time. At about 2:00 pm, the action died off and we decided to head back south to the Sea Buoy where we first started. A very strong north current had pushed us north to the Lotus range as we were chasing the petrels.

At 4:00 pm we were out in the 800 - 850 range when we found the petrels again. Just as it was earlier in the day, we hooked up every time we got under the birds. This time, when we reeled the hooked fish up to the boat, their buddies were following. Cutting the bluerunner up into chunks, got us several more fish as they swam around the stern of the boat. We also found a floating log that held several larger size schoolies. At 5:30 pm, we called it a day and headed back to Haulover to clean fish and the boat. Our fish ranged in size from 4 - 12 pounds.
