Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The best way to describe the action on the reef so far this week is very slow. There has been dirty green water and no current. This has made for some very difficult fishing. If you cover enough ground and get lucky, you'll possibly get a kingfish or two. The best bet so far has been to run offshore and search for dolphin. Also to be found are some tuna, mostly the skipjack variety, and some wahoo.
We put in our time on the reef on both Tuesday and Wednesday without getting a strike. On Wednesday, we took the plunge and ran south to Fowey Light. Starting at the Monument Buoy and continuing south, we found blue water starting in 95-120 feet. Although this was encouraging, there was still no current and the lack of fish continued. On Tuesday the wind was from the south to southwest at 10-22 mph. Wednesday, it blew from the north to northeast at 9-21 mph.
Running offshore proved to be the thing for us to do. We worked the color change in 900' and caught and released 3 skipjack tunas. Moving out to 1040' put us on a decent weedline despite the strong wind. Off the Twins, we caught 5 dolphin in the 5-12# class. Trolling dolphin juniors produced four of the fish and one was caught with live bait. The fish did not hang around with their hooked buddies and moved off very quickly.
With the first cold front of the season coming through our area, we're hoping that it will get the current moving and drive some fish into our area.
Captain Dave
