Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind for the past two days has been from the WNW to NNW. The hot fishing has definitely made up for the chilly air temperature.
Thursday (12/11), Courtland and Louise Conover from Woodland Park, CO wanted to sample the S. Florida fishing action. We loaded the livewell with herring and set up our first drift in 90' in the middle of the Anchorage area. The wind was from the WNW/NW @ 11.5-23 mph. The downrigger produced a kingfish in 146'. In 170' a few dolphin found our baits. The next drift had steady dolphin action starting in 130' out to 390'. Our third drift was a repeat of the second until we got to 350'. A sailfish exploded on the short kite bait and Louise fought it as if she had done it many times before. Actually it was her first sail and she is now one ahead of her husband. The last drift of the day produced the largest dolphin of the day. It threw the kite bait and then swam over to a flatline and hooked up solid. Our day's total was 1 kingfish, 10 dolphin in the 4-12 pound class, and 1 sailfish. It was a day of firsts for Louise. She caught her first kingfish, first dolphin, and first sailfish.
Friday (12/12), the father and son team of Peter Talavera Sr. and Jr. got in a half day's fishing. Again the wind was from the NW/NNW @ 8-14 mph. The light wind gave us almost flat calm seas. We started just south of Haulover Inlet in 70'. When we drifted out to 80', we caught our first dolphin of the day. At 110', we added a kingfish to the box. The downrigger produced a small bonito. With no further action, I started moving south and off 88th street, I spotted numerous birds working out a bit deeper. They were working on a blue edge with scattered weeds in 220'. I was going to slow troll some pilchards when I saw a fish explode on the surface just north of us. We ran to that area and found several large clumps of weed and got instant dolphin action. The highlight of that area was Peter Sr. catching a 15# dolphin on a 12# plug outfit. We moved back to the edge and caught several more smaller fish and then a few bigger schoolies. We had enough dolphin, so we moved south to the Lotus range to try and find a sailfish. Despite the great conditions, we didn't get any other hits. The sum of the mornings fishing was 1 king, 1 bonito, 9 dolphin up to 15 pounds, and a couple of released dolphin.
I still have a few open dates this month, so if you'd like to get in on the action, give me a call to book a date.
Captain Dave
