Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Brrrrrr was it cold last (12/17) night. The NW/NNW wind @ 20-26 mph had the temperature in the upper 50's when we left the dock. The nice thing about
where we fished was that despite the strong wind, the seas were about 1 foot. Numerous layers of clothes helped cut the wind and keep us reasonably warm. Live shrimp was our bait and we fished the Haulover Inlet area. We started the evening by catching and releasing 2 ladyfish. Next we had a strike that had all the characteristics of being a tarpon. We couldn't say for sure since the hook pulled before the fish made a jump to give us a positive ID. A few drifts later, we caught and released a bluefish of about 3 pounds. We made two final drifts in Haulover Inlet itself with no results. The air temperature was dropping like a rock, so we called it an evening and headed for the warmth of Spinnaker Marina.
We'll be out in the evening again in a few days to see if the tarpon will be more cooperative.
The dolphin continue to be flowing through the area. They are being caught in depths from 55 - 400 feet and range in size from very small throw backs to fish in the 20# range. On Saturday (12/13) we fished for a half day and were greeted with a south current against ESE/SE winds of 14 - 17+ mph. This gave us some very sloppy sea conditions. I set up our first drift in 205' just south of Haulover Inlet where we found some pretty blue water. Before I could put out the second bait, we were hooked up to a dolphin and
the school followed there buddy up to the boat. Some quick reactions by my anglers had everyone hooked up and when the school left us, there were 6 dolphin in the fish box in the 5-6 pound range. The remainder of the first drift was uneventful. The blue water was replaced by green water for our second drift and we started in 350'. By now, one of the anglers had succumb to motion sickness. Hooking up a small throw back size dolphin helped his situation for a short time. He hung in there as long as he could, however,
his condition was getting worse so everyone agreed to head back in to calmer water. As soon as he got back on firm ground at the marina and started thinking about fresh dolphin fillets for dinner, he started feeling better quickly.
Don't forget, if you need that last minute Holiday gift for the angler in your life who has everything, there is still time to get them a fishing trip gift certificate. Once purchased, there is no time limit on when they have to be used. Contact me by email or give me a call (305 620-5896) for more details.
