Fishing Report for Miami, Florida

Capt. Bouncer Smith
June 4, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

6/4/02 Boy is it good to be back from the boat yard. The bottom is painted the small

bugs are cured and the boat is 20% faster.

We fished Saturday in beautiful weather. As is common with good weather is

slower fishing. We got a few small dolphin and a yellowtail snapper while drifting

in 100 to 200 feet of water. With all reports slow we took up wreck fishing in 200

to 230 feet of water while keeping one flatline live bait out. Some hard work by my

anglers produced a 6 pound mutton snapper, a small scamp grouper and a couple

big ones that got away. Fishing for all the boats was horrible.

Sunday we fished the “Dusky Owners Dolphin Tournament”. 93 boats going for

the 5 biggest dolphin between 7:30 AM and 2:00 PM. We aimed offshore at the

starting flare with plans of fishing 25 to 45 miles offshore. At 31 miles we got 6

small dolphin around a board, thanks to the 5 birds that lead us to them. After

checking that area with no more action, we worked out to 47 miles. There was no

action. Headed back west, at 34 miles offshore, we found a very weak weeedline. It

was payoff time. We found a grocery bag floating below the surface and got a 15

pound bull dolphin. We found a piece of wood/fiberglass and got several 4 to 6

pounders and lost a wahoo (where was the wire?). The next plastic grocery bag was

a 15 pounder and 3 or 4 more 6 pound dolphin. As weighmaster, I had to be in

early, so it off to the coastline. Our junior angler requested a comfort stop at about

12 miles. While stopped I spotted a 2x4 about 8 feet long a couple hundred yards

away. It produced a 6 pounder and we headed for home. Our 5 best fish weighed

48.2 pounds. That second big fish had regurgitated several pounds of squid during

the fight. Our 48.2 pounds came in 3rd in the tournament. Second was 49.5 pounds

including the best of the tournament. Charles Eldon, captain of Knophatchix II had

a 23.5 pound bull dolphin. Top boat was High Yield with 4 fish caught 47 miles

offshore. They were 3 fish from 20 to 21 pounds and 1 of 11 pounds.

Today was another slow day. We ran south till the blue water and current came

into the reefline. That was 22 miles south of Government Cut. There we made 6

drifts from 200 into 85 feet of water. 5 drifts produced one strike each and no fish,

the second drift produced a 9.5 pound red grouper, a 4 pound mutton snapper, a 8

pound king mackerel, 10 pound false albacore and a 25 pound bull dolphin. A

second big dolphin got away during a tangle. That was one nice drift.

Tonight we fished live crabs south of Government Cut and had one tarpon about

125 pounds on for about 45 minutes when he cut us off on the bottom. We had one

other strike, but never came tight.

Bouncer’s Dusky 33 has plenty of dates open over the summer and it is prime

time for the Bahamas or swordfishing so make your reservations soon, Bouncer
