Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Despite the windy weather, the tarpon fishing remains excellent. If you have the stomach for offshore, there are dolphin and tuna hitting in the Twin Towers to Haulover Inlet area. Lets get to the reports.
Monday (3/1) evening's tarpon fishing started almost like Sunday evening's trip with a few exceptions. On Monday, we left Spinnaker Marina at the normal time of 5 pm. The wind was from the east @ 23-28 mph. Putting out the sea anchor slowed the drift down to an acceptable range. It took until the third drift to get a 60# tarpon on the south side of Government Cut and after releasing the fish, it was time to seek the calmer Bay waters. After setting up, the tarpon action started fast and furious. The first hook up can in less than 5 minutes. Thereafter, we were getting a strike every 10 - 15 minutes. By the time the tide was so far gone that the wind was pushing us against it, we had 6 strikes and landed 5 fish in the 20 - 40 pound range. Final total for the evening was 6 for 7 with live shrimp being the bait.
Wednesday (3/3) was a big boat day. The east wind continued to blow @ 21-27 mph. Leaving Haulover Inlet, we worked our way offshore with the plan being to troll for dolphin and tuna. We found green water out to 800 feet and seas that were a steady 6 - 8 feet with many higher waves coming through. The first strike was a skipjack tuna that we released. In 950' off 71st Street, a small school of dolphin found our juniors and cedar plug. They hung around just long enough for us to land an 8 and 10 pound fish. The remainder of the day was uneventful despite finding lots of birds, trash and heavy scattered weed.
