Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
November Brings Wind and Great Fish
Boy! November is living up to it's reputation. Winds were calm on the first, then rain on the second. We all know how hard the wind has blown since then. We expect two things in November. One is great fishing and the other is windy weather. The good sailors will catch a lot of great fish.
Let's look at some of the action over the last couple weeks.
On October 18th we spent the day bottom fishing. It was a slow day with only a couple sharks, a cuda and a small snapper.
The 19th we caught a small swordfish in the evening.
The 20th we fished the inlet for snook and tarpon. We had pretty good action that resulted in 2 snook, 2 jacks, 2 barracudas and we jumped two tarpon.
October was quite a disappointment as the fall migration of fish failed to appear, just like the cooler weather did not materialize. We caught 3 king mackerel and 3 barracuda on the 23rd. The weather finally arrived on the 24th. We fished the bay for tarpon. We found some fish, but they were not ready to feed. On the 25th and 26th we fished with Steve aboard his new Dusky 256 out of Vero Beach. The trolling was slow, but when the live bait hit the water, it was non-stop action with small sharks, dolphin and bait stealing kings.
We had a great time talking fishing with everyone at the boat show over the weekend of October 28th and 29th. The hard part was hearing about all the fish that had arrived with the fall breezes blowing along the coast.
We got in on the action on Monday. With winds out of the northeast at 15 to 20 knots, we had good action with 2 dolphin, 6 kings from 10 to 20 pounds, 2 big spanish mackerel, a big rainbow runner, mutton snappers of 7 and 10 pounds , a barracuda and 1 out of 2 sailfish.
Tuesday the wind stayed up and the fish did as well. We caught 5 kings to 20 pounds, 5 dolphin to 18 pounds, a 125 pound hammerhead shark, a blacktip shark, 3 mutton snappers and a couple bonito.
Wednesday the wind quit. Look at how much the wind effects the fishing as we share our catch report with you. We still caught the bottom fish. We had 3 mutton snappers and a 21 pound black grouper. We went from numerous kings down to catching only 1 king and 2 spanish mackerel. . We saw no dolphin or sailfish.
We even lost the inlet bite. We fished the inlet on Thursday evening. We had 3 good fish on that behaved like snook, but got away and caught a jack crevalle.
The wind came back on Friday, November 3rd. It blew from the northeast at about 20 knots. The fish came with the wind, as we caught 5 out of 6 sailfish, a 22 pound blackfin tuna, a 15 pound cobia, 3 kings and 1/3 of a 30 pound amberjack. It seems like sharks have become much more of an issue in recent times.
It is November. If the wind blows less than 25 and over 10, you should have super fishing. Spanish mackerel, kings, dolphin , sailfish, grouper, all for the asking. And if the wind is calm, there should be loads of swordfish at night.
