Fishing Report for Miami, Florida

Capt. Bouncer Smith

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

New Year Fishing

Welcome 2008! The old year ended more like July than December weather. The new year is starting out like Alaska in stead of Florida.

Let's back up a little and see how 2007 ended. We fished with Jerry, Scott and Andrew on December 14th. It was a bit windy, but we scored well with an impromptu afternoon trip. We caught a small shark and 2 sailfish off Miami Beach.

We were blown out on Saturday, but got out Sunday afternoon and evening with Don and Sandy. They had hot action with 5 small amberjack on light tackle, lost a couple big amberjacks on all kinds of tackle caught and released a couple mutton snappers and caught some huge blue runners on that 6 and 8 pound line. As the sun disappeared below the hotels of South Beach, they finished their fishing year with a couple tarpon and a ladyfish released.

We shot a TV show with Mark Sosin over the next couple days. Mark caught 3 sailfish, 4 nice dolphin and a couple kings.

Robert, Arturo and Angel wanted bottom fish the next day, and they got a workout. They scored with mutton snappers of 9 and 11 pounds. They caught a 13 pound genuine red snapper, a scamp grouper, a lane snapper, 3 almaco jacks and 10 amberjacks up to 30 pounds.

Fishing was slow the next day for Heather Harkavy and her dad, but they pulled it off with a big yellow jack, an almaco jack a 30 pound amberjack on heavy tackle and then 8 dolphin on fly.

Hank and Danny filled their freezers with 3 grey grouper to 30 pounds and a 14 pound black grouper. A couple big amberjacks made sure their arms were sore.

Mark Wallace had sore arms along with his son when they caught 11 bonitos, and 8 amberjacks in the 8 pound class on spinning outfits anchored over a wreck. Add their 2 grouper over 20 pounds each and you have a great day of action.

The Feibus guys caught 5 of 6 tarpon that evening off Miami Beach using live shrimp for bait.

The 27th and 28th were slow both day and night. Then the 29th the fish were back. Joe Della Monica and his adult sons, Joe and Jay caught 2 sails, 7 dolphin, 2 mutton snappers and a king.

That evening Romesh and 2 guys named Paul caught 3 tarpon in three drifts off South Beach. Then it was 3 ladyfish, then it was 3 beers at Monty's.

The 30th was super rough, but The Della Monicas caught a sailfish, a shark and a yellow jack before calling it quit early to enjoy lunch before heading to the airport.

The 31st was dead calm and dead fishing. We caught a yellow jack and an almaco jack all day. What a bum finish to the year.

Welcome 2008. I fished with my family in the morning. My niece Alex caught her first amberjack and african pompano. She was very upset when she was forced to share her yellow jack with a shark or barracuda that cut it off behind the head.

I will be doing a seminar on "Fishing the Edge" on January 30th at Dusky Sport Center at 6 PM. Learn where to stop and how to fish there for sailfish, kings, tuna and more along the edge of the south Florida reefs and Gulf Stream.

It is time for sailfish by day and tarpon by night, let's go catch some. [email protected] 305-439-2475
