Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
October 9, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

KINGFISH!

The kingfish are here. Beginning with Wednesday of last week, the kingfish have made a pretty good showing. We limited out every day we fished, and on Saturday had up to 20 kingfish in the first 2 hours of fishing. Most of the kings are less than 10 pounds, but each day, with the exception of today, we managed at least one or two fish in the 20-pound range. During the weekend the kingfish were found a bit deeper than usual. We caught kings from 120 ft all the way out to 190 ft. The rain from last week has really caused a lot of green water out on the reef. Biscayne Bay has had a lot of fresh water run off, and that has been steadily streaming out to the ocean. The only good thing, is that the kingfish actually like tat green water. I ran out as far as 400 ft and still did not find clean blue water. On Sunday, I did hear of some boats finding dolphin anywhere from 400 - 1000 ft of water.

Towards last week and in to the weekend, the weather was calm and the ocean relatively flat. Today was a different story. The wind was still coming out of the NW this morning, so we decided to give it a go. With the wind bowing NW 20 knots, the seas up in to the reef were still only 2 - 4 ft. As you moved farther offshore, the seas built. As the day went on, the wind changed to the North and had gusts of around 25 knots. Even fishing on the reef was starting to get uncomfortable. With a limit of kingfish in the boat and one angler who had to catch a flight out to Ohio, we called it a day at 2:00 p.m. As the angler stated, I would rather be fishing in 25 knots of wind in Florida, than heading back to expected temperatures in Ohio of 30 degrees.

The wind is supposed to clock around to the NE then East in the next couple of days. Hopefully that will drive in some clean blue water. That in conjunction with this cold front should spruce up the offshore action even more.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
