Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
October 24, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well the word to describe the fishing would be WINDY! Today the wind is forecasted to be NE 25 - 30 knots with higher gusts. Seas are 10 -13 ft, with seas in the Gulfstream up to 20 ft. This is beyond Viking weather. Even the bravest souls are at port today. Unfortunately the wind is supposed to stick around for a couple of more days.

The good news is that before the wind kicked up, the fishing was pretty good. Kingfish were the main attraction last week, and Saturday was the first day we did not catch our limit, although we got some nice fish over 20 lbs. and lost a big king next to the boat. He was probably every bit of 25 - 30 pounds. Often what happens with the big kings, is they put up a decent fight until they see the boat. Once you get them next to the boat, watch out. Almost always they will make a real hard run away from the boat. If you are prepared, no problem. Point the rod towards the fish to eliminate some line pressure and be careful if they surge under the boat, as did our fish. If the fish runs under the boat, don't be afraid to put that rod tip in the water, and help the line clear from the boat or the motors. After that surge, you should be able to fight him back to within gaffing distance, or if you really don't like kingfish steaks, cut him lose so he can live another day.

Towards the end of the week and into the weekend, the sailfish also made a decent showing. A couple of boats had doubles and we ended up with two fish almost every day we fished. The water was still pretty green, but when it clears up and we get that nice deep blue edge, the sailfish should show up real good. Every cold front, regardless is it reaches us, pushes more sailfish from the north into our home waters.

So when the wind dies down, give the offshore scene a try. The fish is very good and should continue to improve, If your interested in a charter, do not hesitate to give us a call
