Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
October 30, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

In my opinion, one of the most exciting fish to catch in South Florida is the sailfish. Everytime someone on my boat catches one, I get excited. If it is the customer's first sailfish, that makes it even better. Add one better, if the angler is a youth catching his or hers first, it is memorable.

Yesterday, we had a last minute charter cancellation due to health reasons, so I decided to take my two kids fishing. Lauren is 12 years old, and Brittany is 6 years old. Both have fished before, catching their fair share of dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, barracuda, snappers etc. We decided that we were going to try to get Lauren her first sailfish. Well wouldn't you know it, but not only did she catch one, she caught TWO! I cannot describe how happy and proud I was to watch her catch her first sailfish. As every parent knows, there are certain memorable moments in your child's life, that you will never forget, nor will your children. This day was one of them.

The first sailfish ate a threadfin on the kite. Both Brittany and I reeled in all the other rods, so we could give Lauren a clean shot at her fish. After what seemed like an eternity, actually 20 minutes, we landed her sailfish. After a few quick pictures, we released it to swim another day. So not only did the kids have fun, but they also learned a little bit about conservation. She caught her second sailfish and we released that one as well.

During the day she also caught an 18-pound kingfish, and a shark. Brittany also caught a dolphin to add to the catch.

Overall it was a wonderful day of fishing. I was very proud of both my girls.

If you are interested in taking a child fishing or are interested in a charter of your own, give us a shout. The sailfish action should continue to get better as the season goes on.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
