Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
November 20, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past weekend was the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament. This is the first billfish tournament of the season. We fished this tournament on SeaVee's brand new 34 foot openfisherman powered by twin Mercury outboards. To say this boat is impressive, is making an understatement. Although 2 of the 3 days were calm, the third day was just rough enough to prove that bigger is better. This boat just knifed through the rougher water.

We fished south between Haulover Cut and Fowey Light all three days. The first day, the conditions were perfect. A slight NW wind and a strong north current. There was a nice deep blue edge on the reef and the conditions looked right. We went three for four on sailfish and caught at least a half dozen nice size dolphin. We were actually moving away from the dolphin to keep our baits strictly for sailfish.

The second day we went 0 for 1, and the same for day three. The conditions down south on Day 2 were no wind with a light current. We should have moved back north, were the bite was pretty good. In a tournament, you have to go with your gut instincts and stop second guessing yourself afterwards. Although day three had some wind, the fish were scattered. Only about 14 fish were caught on the last day. Even with the two missed fish, we would have moved up to a max of 8th place, instead we dropped below the top 10.

Congratulations to all the winners, especially to a good friend of mine Joe Turner on the charter boat Absolute, who ended up in third.

The sailfishing should improve with every cold front that pushes down. We are expecting a really good cold front tonight, and I expect the sailfish action to pick up and be excellent all the way through this weekend.

If your interested in a charter this week or in the future, give us a shout, and we'll have you hooked up and battling sailfish in no time.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
