Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
January 15, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing off of Miami remains real good. The blue water has moved in and there is North current to boot. The kingfish bite by Fowey has been very good, although most fish are on the smaller side, but not small enough to throw back. Average weight for us has been about 8 lbs., although we had a kingfish skyrocket our goggle eye on the kite that must have been at least 35 lbs. It is impressive to see those big kings jump literally 10 ft in the air. The king bite has been productive on the deep baits and the intermediate depth baits. We have been using mostly pilchards and herring for the kings.

Dolphin fishing is good one day and off the next. We caught a dozen one day, none the next and then another handful the day after. I did hear of some 20 and 30 lb. dolphin being caught today. Most of the dolphin we have found have been on the edge between 200 - 100 ft depth.

Sailfish has been very good for us. The bite seems to happen for only a short time, but is real good. Early morning has been good as well as late afternoon. During the late afternoons, we have been chumming really heavy with the live baits, and have had sailfish pop up within feet of the boat. We have had at least 3- 4 bites per day. Yesterday we were 3 - 3 , and today unfortunately we went 1 for 4, although young Mike (14 years old) got his first sailfish.

Yesterday we had one sailfish come up on the kite bait, and I must say, I actually felt sorry for this goggle eye. This poor goggle eye was going nuts. He was dashing to right, then to the left, practically jumping out of the water, while Mr. Sailfish was hunting him down. It wasn't long until he crashed on the bait. The sailfish have been eating both the kite baits as well as flatline baits. Overall the fishing has been good, granted you're in the right place at the right time.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
