Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
1/29/01
The fishing last week started off with cold weather and good fishing. On Monday we fished in cold, windy, rainy, and foggy weather. The fog was so thick, that you could hardly see your kite and your kite baits. Even with all that, we got four sailfish, a half dozen nice size dolphin (biggest was 21 pounds) and some kingfish. We also caught a 15-pound mutton snapper on a flatline pilchard. I guess it was so overcast, that poor mutton couldn't tell he was swimming towards the surface. As long as you are catching fish, the weather doesn't seem to bother you. The sailfishing stayed very good up to about Friday. Saturday we had our worst trip in a long time. We couldn't buy a bite, and that seemed to hold true for most of the fleet. No matter what depth we tried - No Luck. I fished from Triumph all the way to Haulover with no success. Sunday the wind picked up, and the fishing improved slightly. The water was still quite green with very little current, which usually spells disaster. On our first drift we got a sailfish up in our kite baits, but he quickly faded without eating his breakfast. Second drift produced a bonita and kingfish, and unfortunately seasickness for two of the passengers. Both were little kids (age 5 and 9), and we had to pack it up early. Reports for the rest of day from the rest of the fleet were still slow. We need to get that blue water and North current again, so the fishing can pick up.
Tarpon fishing in the morning and at early evening has been fairly good, especially around Haulover. As long as the water temp does not drop much below 70 degrees, the tarpon should bite. With a warming trend this week, the tarpon fishing should get even better.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
