Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

4/2/01

Spring Fishing has arrived. This past week saw good catches of sailfish, dolphin, kingfish, bonitas, and some blackfin tuna have started to show up. Nighttime fishing for tarpon has also been very good.

Dolphin fishing was good but at times a bit frustrating. Although most of the dolphin have been small and reluctant to eat, there have been a few larger (10 - 30 pound) fish caught. Kingfishing slowed down from last week, but limit catches were still made. Sailfish have been quite plentiful from Broward County into the Keys. There doesn't seem to be a distinct hot spot for the sailfish - just find blue water and a north current, and using live baits, it shouldn't be long until a sailfish or two will show up.

Last Saturday I will describe one of our drifts and it will illustrate what spring fishing is about. We had just set up just inside of a blue water edge. Three flatlines with pilchards were set out, and we were putting out two goggle eyes on the kite. As we were letting the kite and the bait out, two sailfish jumped all over our baits. As two anglers were fighting the two sailfish, all three flatlines went off. We had a triple-header sailfish, a bonita, and a kingfish all at once. The rest of the day went very well. We caught two more sailfish, the bonita, and the kingfish cut us off next to the boat. The rest of the day we hooked 3 more sailfish and landed two and a few more bonita. While we were live chumming, we had sailfish up behind the boat eating the live chum baits. By the time we tossed a pitch bait to him, he had taken off.

Tarpion fishing in the evening has been very productive. We have been catching between 2 and 4 fish per night and have hooked up to 6 in one night. Most of the tarpon are quite large. The largest fish we landed last week was very close to 140 pounds. Tarpon fishing is good until May, so book your trip and lets go catch some monster tarpon.

This weekend is the Miami Billfish Tournament which starts Friday and end Sunday. It will be held out of the Miami Beach Marina. Come by and check out the weigh-ins and see the boats coming in with their sailfish release flags. The tournament is a fun tournament on and off of the water.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
