Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

4/2/01

Last weekend saw plenty of action for the Miami Billfish Tournament. 408 sailfish were caught and released as well as a few white marlin. This was a record for the tournament. Sailfish conditions were ideal with strong North Current, clean blue water and 15 mph east winds to keep the kites flying well. Most of the fish were caught between the Miami Sea Buoy and Haulover Inlet. On Sunday the bite shifted to the south and the boat Sea Hunter capitalized on the action and caught 8 sailfish in the last hour to claim victory. Congrats to the Sea Hunter team as well as to all the other winners. We didn't fair as well but we did catch a total of 5 sailfish and missed three others.

Kingfish action was outstanding on Friday with many kingfish over 20 pounds. As soon as you drifted shallower then 120 ft., the kingfish were there tearing up the $100 per dozen goggle eyes. The kingfish bite slow down a bit on Saturday and Sunday. Quite a few blackfin tuna also showed up, and we caught one 24 pounder on Saturday. Although we caught some dolphin, dolphin fishing was slow overall, but probably due to all the anglers hunting down the sailfish. I know of al least three white marlin caught, including one by a good friend of mine, Warren, on the boat Warren Peace.

Outlook looks good for the remainder of this week. Blue water and North current are still here, which should keep the sailfish and the dolphin chewing. Kingfish action inside of 120 foot should be very good, and the blackfin should continuously increase in numbers. Tarpon fishing last night was very good as we hooked five tarpon, the largest at around 125 pounds. Tarpon fishing should remain great well into May. Overall, the outlook looks great, so go out and enjoy!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
