Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

6/25/01
Another summer week goes by, and so does another great Bahama trip. We just returned from another trip to Bimini and fishing areas north and south of Bimini. The first day was dedicated to fishing some wrecks on the Bank that rumor had were red hot with lots of fish from permit, cobia, mangroves, groupers etc. The wreck in mind was to the south of Bimini. We caught bar jacks, blue runners cudas and small groupers and snappers. Not exactly what we were looking for but plenty of action. We stayed for about an hour, and then went off to the reef. Here we caught yellowtails, grouper, horse jacks, and running back to Bimini, we caught 30 or so dolphin. We were going to fish for muttons in front of Bimini in the late afternoon, but since a storm was rolling in and we had plenty of fish to clean, we decided to stay dry, shower up in the hotel and go to dinner.
The next day was spectacular. Going to one of my favorite spots to the north, we caught yellowtail snappers that were pulling drag on 20 pound test. We caught some yellowtails between 5 and 6 pounds. That is more than just a flag. One of these yellowtails was so big that it ate a live goggle eye that we were free lining for the big kingfish that roam this area. I should call this area Jurassic Park because for whatever reason, everything you catch here is big. Not only was every yellowtail between 2 - 6 pounds, the sharks we hooked were huge, kingfish up top 50 pounds, last week amberjack up to 65 pounds. Before calling it a day, I decided to try one more new area for kingfish. Good plan, because we put our limit of kingfish in the boat in less than 20 minutes. We also had a 15 pound dolphin swim to the boat. We quickly tossed a live bait out to him and caught him. One of the guys on the boat said, "I never thought my arms could get tired from catching fish, but my arms actually hurt". We had a perfect crossing back to the U.S. Another great week of fishing, can't wait for the next trip over (the wait won't be long, it's just a few days away).
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
