Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

8/27/01
What a great Bahama trip. The weather was absolutely great. Flat calm seas made for a great crossing both ways. We fished up North on the first day and found some decent current. Wind was flowing with what little wind we had, which made excellent yellowtail conditions. We caught quite a few yellowtail, of which most were between 2 – 4 pounds. We only had one yellowtail caught that was below the 12-inch limit. We also fun with horse eye jacks, small groupers, cudas and when the sharks showed up and shut the yellowtail down, we caught a few sharks. All in all, the anglers in the party had some sore arms and backs with all the fish that were caught.
The second day turned out to be the clincher. Again flat calm conditions, allowed us to run to some far out places. In two days of fishing, we ran 312 miles overall. By the mileage, you can tell we didn’t fish in front of Bimini, but really went to some far spots. We fished south the second day and the first two areas only revealed some barracudas (big ones), some sharks (again big sharks), some small yellowfin grouper, and some nice size mangrove snappers. The third spot was the charm. We caught numerous cobia, released even more cobia and finally left the area, with the cobia still biting. It is easy to get carried away, but remember, there are limits, conservation makes sense, and everyone comes home with plenty for dinner and then some. We could have stayed and caught every cobia in that area, but what does that do for the next time, or the next guy who comes across that area. Cobias are such great fighters and so much fun to catch. We had them so fired up, that there were actually cobia eating chum right out of the chum bag. I told one of my anglers to cast a jig, which cobia love, and he replied where? There were at least 10 cobias behind the boat, including the one that had his mouth on the chum bag. Needless to say, everyone had a blast!
Don’t let the season run out, there still time to experience “Fishing in the Bahamas”, so gives us a call soon or you’ll have to wait until next year.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
