Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

11/13/01

The conditions for the past 4 days have been less than ideal, but the fishing has been OK. There has been green water and mostly a South current from the Miami Sea Buoy to Haulover. As you move offshore past 200 – 300 ft of depth, the current switched to the North, but the water was still not that pretty blue we want for sailfishing.

Sailfishing and dolphin fishing on Friday was pretty good, with some boats getting multiple shots at the sails. On Saturday we did well with kingfish, and most of the kingfish were decent in size. Dolphin fishing was OK – our biggest fish was about 15 pounds. Sailfishing was slow on Saturday, although we watched a small boat hook one 30 yards from our boat.

Sunday the kingfish continued to bite, but were smaller in size. The action was fairly consistent with multiple bites on every drift. By Monday, the conditions were about the same, but the wind picked up a bit from the N – NE. Tired of fishing in green water, I went to 500 ft, and although the water was not blue, it was definitely cleaner. Drifting on that deep edge, with goggle eyes on the kite and pilchards on the flatlines, it didn’t take long for the dolphin to show up. Setting up on that deep edge, we also landed a shark. The wind picked up a bit, so I decided to go in to the more traditional sailfish depths. About 15 minutes into our drift, we got a king and a cuda and soon after one of the flatlines really started to go. I wasn’t long until we had a sailfish on. After a very decent battle, we had our sailfish boatside, took a few pictures and released him to fight another day. Being that this was only a half-day charter, after we released the sailfishing, it was time to head home.
