Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 15, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

7/15/02

Fishing for dolphin has been a little bit on the tough side. Lack of debris offshore has made finding dolphin more difficult. Even if you find debris, that does not guarantee dolphin. Most of the dolphin have been under birds.

Sailfish on the reef have been fairly productive, as have the bonitas. Swordfishing slowed down a bit, and most of the swordfish caught have been smaller. The upcoming moon should have the swordfish biting again. Last month was a very good month for swordfish, with multiple shots per night.

On the bright side, besides excellent swordfishing in the summer, the Bahamas fishing is very good. Having just returned from a 2-day trip to Bimini, the bottom fishing was very good. Fishing a new area for red grouper was extremely productive. Almost all the groupers we caught were on pure jigs. The biggest red grouper (on the scale) was 18 pounds and the smallest at 10 pounds. We fished this area for a little while but left while the fish were still biting. Having put enough fish in the box for dinner and then some, we didn’t want to wipe the area out. It’s important with bottom fish, not to clean out an area, because it can take quite a bit of time for them to come back.

We also went to the Gingerbread area on the second day, and as is typical, the yellowtail were fired up, big and hungry. When the yellowtail are biting, the action can be hot and heavy. We had the yellowtails up within 15 feet from the transom and had them eating. We also caught quite a few dolphin during our trip. What topped it off was absolutely great weather. Flat calm seas, no rain, and sunny skies made it for a great weekend.

If this sounds like a weekend of fun, give me a call, since before you know it the summer will be over.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
