Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
August 19, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

08/19/02

Autumn fishing doldrums – Everyone has heard it, but that is the exact opposite of what is going on. The fishing on the reef has been very good, with lots of sailfish, wahoo, dolphin, bonitas, and a few kingfish.

On Saturday we fish the 3rd leg of the Mercury / SeaVee Pompano Saltwater Series, and although we didn’t win it, we caught lots of fish. We caught and released 7 out of 8 sailfish. We also caught dolphin (non of any great size) way too many bonitas, kingfish and a large amount of wahoo were caught by many of the other boats (unfortunately not us). With the exception of the bonitas, it sounds like an impressive winter day, with the only kicker is that it is in August. Catching 7 out of 8 sailfish is a great day – any day of the year.

The next day fishing with a charter we caught sailfish, kingfish, missed a nice wahoo, bonitas, dolphin and a spinner shark. The hot bite right now, and should continuously get better this week, has been the wahoo fishing. The wahoo bite during the full moon in August can be very good. Concentrate on fishing a bit deeper, and put some bigger baits down a 100 or so feet. Your shot at a good-sized wahoo is real. The biggest wahoo I heard of this week was a 70 pounder caught up in Ft. Lauderdale, and there have been plenty of 50 pounders caught from Miami to Palm Beach.

Haven’t heard much on the swordfish bite, as it has been a little choppy for most of the boats to go out and enjoy it. The full moon should heat things up for the swords as well. About the only thing that has been slow, has been finding dolphin offshore, which for many has not been a good year. So if it’s live baiting on the reef or swordfishing at night, it sounds very promising.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
