Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

9/16/02

Offshore fishing in Miami is heating up. Somebody forgot to tell the sailfish that it was September. Fishing on a half day last week, and fishing on the edge between the Miami Sea Buoy and Key Biscayne, we caught 2 out 3 sailfish one day, kingfish, dolphin and bonitas. There has also been a good amount of wahoo caught. The real surprise has been the sailfish. With kites flying, besides the warm weather, the action seemed like winter. There has been a nice blue edge with a strong North current, which has really got the sailfish eating. There were quite a few boats with 2 to 4 sailfish releases this past weekend. Wahoo fishing has also been productive with a few fish in the 50 plus pound range. Early in the week, dolphin fishing to the south was pretty good for both those who were running offshore as well as the live bait fisherman on the reef. With the approach of fall, the fall run of kingfish should begin soon. We already have good action on the reef, which should only get better.

Swordfishing was a bit of hit or miss this past week. On Monday we caught one swordfish about 70 lbs and caught and released a shark. Next trip was Friday night and we pulled one off and caught a large shark. Sunday night we had two solid hook ups with swordies, and managed to pull the hooks on both of them. As with swordfishing, it has been consistently good, but you do get an occasional slow night. I would expect the swordfish action to heat up, especially on the backside of the full moon approaching this weekend.

So whether you are looking for live bait action on the reef for sailfish, dolphin, kingfish, or wahoo, or if you want to tackle the ultimate big game species – swordfish – Gives us a call and lets make it happen.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
