Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
February 13, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

02/13/03

Fishing has been pretty steady this past week. There have not been a lot of huge numbers of sailfish caught, but we have been averaging 1 – 5 sailfish per day. There has been a lack of good North current and good clean blue water for most of last week, but yesterday we finally started seeing bluer water with a moderate North current. The sailfish should in turn respond to this and we should start seeing more sailfish per day. The sailfish that we have caught have been mostly on the kite baits with either herring or goggle eyes.

There have been plenty of dolphin to fill in the voids during the day. They have been averaging 3 – 15 pounds. With the upcoming full moon though, they will become more finicky and may not bite as well.

Kingfishing is still pretty good, especially around Government Cut. Most of the kings have been from 70 – 120 ft of water. Live baits have been the preference, but the kingfish also respond well to deep jigging with a small white jig.

Tarpon fishing has been good as well. There have been tarpon both at Haulover Inlet as well as Government Cut. We tarpon fished one night this week and caught a 100 pounder and a 60 pounder. Both fish ate live shrimp.

Swordfishing on the other hand has been great. If the weather is good, and you can get out, you have a real good shot at a few swordfish per night. We got out one trip this week, and we caught 2 swordfish. We had another swordfish follow a bait to the surface, but we couldn’t get a hook stuck in him. He batted the bait with his bill and killed it, but wouldn’t come back to eat. This swordfish actually hung around our boat for over 3 minutes. Although we tried to bait him with another live bait, he must have sensed something was wrong. Talk about excitement though, it is quite the sight to see a swordfish swim in and out of the light with his huge bill slicing the water. We had to postpone a swordfish trip tonight, but have a few booked next week.

I have the next 10 days booked, but after that we have some openings available. Also start thinking about summer Bahamas trips as well as summer swordfish trips, as those are beginning to book as well.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
