Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
February 17, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

02/17/03

Same as last week’s report - The fishing has been pretty steady for the past few days. It seemed to die off a bit today, although we did catch 2 sailfish today as well as some bonitas. For the past few days, the sailfishing has been pretty good. We went 4 for 7 one day, 3 for 6 the following day then 2 for 2 for the next two days. Along with the sailfish, have been catching plenty of dolphin. With the full moon, they have been finicky, but we havecaught our share.

Kingfish has slowed way down. We caught a 30 pounder on Friday, but haven’t seen another one since then. The ones I did hear being caught were small and down towards Fowey Light. The sailfish action has been from Key Biscayne to the anchorage off Miami. Current is an important factor in sailfishing, and a North current is just what you need. Yesterday though we could have had too much current. We had 5 knots of North current off of Miami. Today we had close to 3 knots. It makes for very long and fast drifts, and in all reality, it may be too much current. As the current will come back to normal, and with the next few small cold fronts, it should get the sailfish biting again.

Tarpon fishing has been very good. We went tarpon fishing twice in the past week. We caught 2 out of 2 one night, and then had a great evening where we caught 6 out 8 tarpon. That night I fished with the guys from Mercury (Best Outboards in the World). As soon as we let out our live shrimp, we hooked up to a massive tarpon. It was still daylight and no doubt, it was at least a 150 pound fish. The tarpon jumped us off almost immediately, but then we proceeded to catch 6 out of our next 7 strikes. Most of the tarpon were 80 –100 pounds, with only one fish below the 80 pound mark. I have been using live shrimp for the tarpon.

I had one swordfish trip that we had to postpone due to weather, but I have another scheduled for this Thursday night. Hopefully the weather will hold out.

We will be fishing every day this week, so I should have another report soon. Start thinking about summer Bahamas trips as well as summer swordfish trips, as those are beginning to book.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
