Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
February 25, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

02/24/03

It was a very busy last 15 days. As typical with the Boat Show in town, I fished everyday for the past 15 days. The action was great almost every single day. Sailfish cooperated on a daily basis. . Our best day was 7 for 9 on the sailfish and we had quite a few 3- 5 and 4 for 6 days. Our slowest day was an afternoon trip, were we caught 1 out 3 sails. The bite started off of the Anchorage in Miami and then shifted south between the Monument Buoy and Fowey Light. Early last week, we had pretty blue water off of Miami, and that’s were the sailfish were. As the conditions diminished, the sailfish pushed south. The water down south was not great, but not that bad. Either way, the sailfish stayed between the Monument and Fowey for a few days. I didn’t fish today, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the sailfish have already moved down towards the Beacon. As cold fronts come and go, the sailfish move up and down the coast, but predominately this time of year, they will be found between Monument Buoy and farther south.

Dolphin also stuck around almost the entire week. There were days that we caught quite a few dolphin, and then days where we didn’t catch any. The kingfish showed up again, but this time they were mostly located off of Haulover. The bonitas also decided to make a showing and really put a hurting on us last Sunday. With only one angler on board, besides the 4 sailfish we hooked, this one angler must have caught 40 bonitas in the day. There was a point in the day that as soon as the live bait hit the water, we had a bonita on. Needless to say, with all the bonitas we hooked, I even got to fight a few. The one fish that started to show up was the blackfin tuna. Some boats caught a few blackfins last week. We had one on, but pulled the hook on him.

Going fishing again tomorrow and then the next 4 – 5 days, so we’ll keep you updated.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
