Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
March 30, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

03/30/03

Fishing this past week was exceptional for sailfish early in the week. Unfortunately, I was either not booked or cancelled for the early part of the week, when the sailfish were biting best. I don’t know any boats that caught sails in the double digits, but a few boats had 5 – 9 sailfish per day.

The dolphin during the week were also quite plentiful, with quite a few 20 – 25 pound fish being caught. As we enter into spring and summer, the dolphin will move out into the Gulfstream and start their migration towards the south. Typical dolphin fishing involves “run and gun”, where you run offshore and look for promising areas to fish. Areas such as birds diving, rips and debris, will clue you in on where dolphin may be.

Kingfish have been plentiful and there have been some decent size kingfish caught. The area around the Boil has been holding kings, although we fished south of Fowey on Saturday, and we had plenty of kingfish skyrocketing on our kite baits.

Tarpon fishing in the evening has been on and off, although we are getting into the time (April and May) when the tarpon are not only bigger but quite consistent as well.

I didn’t have any sword trips this past week, and the reports have been scarce. I did hear it was pretty good Wednesday night.

Quiet a few cobias have been caught, and when we saw a huge whale shark come towards our boat on Saturday, I was hoping that a few cobias would be with the whale shark. None were around, but we did get a few good pictures of the whale shark.

With this approaching front (got cancelled for our swordfish trip tonight as well as tomorrow’s day trip) the sailfish action should pick back up. Got a few trips this week, so we’ll keep you posted.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
