Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters
04/13/03
It’s been almost two weeks from the last report, but things have been pretty busy. The one thing that comes to mind from the past two weeks is the variety of different species being caught. We have caught, sailfish, swordfish, tarpon, kingfish, mackerel, mutton snappers, grouper, amberjacks, bonitas, sharks, dolphin, etc.
The one species that has just shown up, but has avoided us has been the blackfin tuna. The blackfins like low light conditions, and we have a late afternoon trip this week, so hopefully they will show up for us.
The sailfishing has been decent, especially earlier in the week. There was a strong north current and blue water in front of Miami, but as of yesterday, the current went slightly south, but the water still looked half way decent.
The kingfishing has been absolutely excellent, with a lot of big fish being caught.
The tarpon fishing at night has also been excellent. We were 4 for 7 on our best night and 1 – 3 on our slowest night. Most fish have been right at 100 pounds, and have been eating both shrimp and crabs.
Last night we went swordfish and caught 2 out of 3 swordfish. The first fish pulled at least 500 yards of 80 pound on its first run. We got the angler in the harness, started to pick up the lines to give chase, when the hook pulled. As we were lamenting the loss, another rod went off, and after 40 minutes we landed a nice 53-inch (lower jaw to fork length) swordfish. This one came in a bit tired and was in no condition for a clean release, so we kept him for the table. We set back up, and about an hour later, we landed and released a 47-inch swordfish. What a great sight to watch the little ones swim away.
I’m going back out tonight, and hopefully we’ll catch the one that got away last night.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
