Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

04/30/03
Spring fishing has arrived.
The fishing this past week has been excellent, especially in the early morning and late afternoons. Lets start off with yesterday. We fished the 5th Annual SeaVee Boats Owners Tournament. There were almost 50 boats in the tournament and I am happy to report that we won the tournament. We weighed in numerous kingfish and several big blackfin tunas. We also caught a 30-pound cobia and a sailfish. The sailfish was released, and the cobia did not count, since the tournament was geared to tunas, dolphin, kingfish, and wahoo. The tournament was a lot of fun. All our fish were caught in front of Key Biscayne.
The fishing during the week has been very good. We have caught sailfish on almost every trip this past week. The sailfish bite has been best after 2:00pm. The same holds true for the blackfin tuna that have finally shown up. They were a little late this year, but hopefully will make up for it with bigger numbers of fish. The tunas that we have been catching have been in the 25 – 30 pound range.
Kingfish have been abundant, and early morning has been best. The kings this past week were all 10 – 30 pounds. Amberjacks are plentiful on the wrecks, and these fish surely put a test on your back muscles.
Night fishing for swordfish and tarpon has also been very good. Tarpon have been biting both crabs and shrimp and numerous fish per trip has been the norm. The swordfishing has been excellent this past week. I had three trips this week and the results are 3 for 6 one night and then 2 for three on the other two nights. The night we caught three out of the 6, we also landed a beauty of a fish that weighed in at 180 pounds. On one of the other nights, we had a sword pull over 500 yards of 80-pound test line on its first run. Unfortunately we pulled the hook on her, but based on the first run, I would have to say that she was a big fish. One night during this week, we also had a double header of swordfish on. That was fun. Swordfish trips are starting to book pretty good into the summer, so as calm evenings become the norm. If you want to try for the most prized gamefish and feel the pull of a mighty swordfish, don’t miss out – book your trips now.
