Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing (catching) we are experiencing off of South Florida is about as good as it gets. Every trip this past week, has been very good. Kingfish again this week were abundant and ranging on the big size. The average king was about 10 pounds, but we caught some nice smokers in the 30 to 40 pound range. The bigger kings have been caught on the larger kite baits. The blackfin tuna are also here. Average blackfins we caught, were right around 30 pounds. We actually had the blackfins chummed behind the boat exploding on the freebies we had thrown in the water. Our largest two blackfins this week (32 pounds and 35 pounds) were caught on the kite baits. Although the blackfins are sometimes mixed in with the bonitas, and they may even look a little bit alike, there is no mistaking when you have a blackfin hooked up. Their power is awesome for a fish that size. Another good showing this week have been the cobias. Although we only caught one cobia this past week, there have been quite a few caught amongst the fleet. Great fighters and good tasting make this a prized fish as well. Dolphin also joined in on the action with some nicer 20 –30 pound fish in the mix. On Friday we had an estimated 35 pound bull dolphin, eat the long goggle eye on the starboard kite, miss the hook, then eat the long goggle eye on the port kite, and miss that hook as well. As we pulled in the kite to replace the baits, he followed the short threadfin in, but wouldn’t eat it. We tossed a pilchard at him, he charged, ate the bait, we had him hooked up, and he mussed have kinked the wire, and broke free. As he broke free, he started greyhounding across the surface, and from looking at him jumping away, I swore he was snickering at us. I guess some fish are just meant to go free. Sailfish have also been abundant this past week. Our best day was 3 sailfish in one day, but we have been getting at least one per day.

The nighttime action has been just as good. The tarpon have been cooperating on every trip. Our slowest night has been 1 out 2, but more common has been 3 or 4 tarpon per night. Swordfish trips have been hampered due to wind, but our last trip we caught 2 out of 3 swordfish, and had another doubleheader. The action has been on the live baits. We have another sword trip planned for tonight, and hopefully the wind will come down a bit to allow us to go, if not we will be going tarpon fishing.

As you can see, the fishing doesn’t get much better. Fishing in the spring in South Florida can be tremendous, and the past few weeks have been just that.

Swordfish trips an Bahama trips are starting to book pretty good into the summer, so as calm evenings and days become the norm, lets go swordfishing or lets take a trip to the islands. Don’t miss out – book your trips now.
