Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
May 19, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

05/19/03

The spring fishing in Miami continues to be outstanding! What a great month it has been. Leading the list again have been the kingfish. Size has come down a bit, and this entire week we only caught one or two 30 pound kingfish. The rest were from 10 – 20 pounds. With the exception of Saturday, we caught our limit on every full day trip. The blackfin tunas have also been around, and we caught 1 to 3 tunas on every trip except one. The largest tuna we caught was 34 pounds. Most of the bigger blackfin tunas have been caught with live goggle eyes on the kites.

Sailfish have been around in decent numbers and on Thursday afternoon we hooked 6 sails. The sailfish bite seems better in the afternoon, although there have been days when we hooked 1 or 2 sails in the morning.

The night activity has also been productive. We had one swordfish trip this past week and we caught 1 out of 2 swordfish. The swordfish was just at legal length, but we opted to release it. The swordfish was hooked in the corner of the mouth and was in excellent condition when we got him boatside. This allowed for a nice clean and quick release. It is quite the sight, to see those fish, especially the little ones, swim away.

Tarpon fish has also been very good. We went Thursday night and caught 2 out of 3. Both fish caught were right around 100 pounds each. All three tarpon ate crabs and all our bites came after the sun went down. There is not much longer left to this tarpon season, so if you want to catch a monster tarpon there are only a few weeks left.

Summer fishing is going to set in soon, which means Bahama trips and evening swordfish trips. If those sound interesting, give me a call and let’s go catch em.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
