Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

05/28/03
The kingfishing has finally slowed down, but is not over. The spring spawn of kingfish, really triggered their feeding habits and a lot of kingfish were caught in April and May in Miami. The kingfish were relatively big as well as numerous. This past week, we saw a slow down in the kingfish, but there were still enough around to warrant the use of wire on all our leaders. We didn’t catch any huge kings, but did catch a few around 20 pounds.
Although the kingfish may have tapered off a bit, the sailfishing, especially for late May has been great. Our best this past week was 4 out 5 and yesterday we caught 3 out of 4 sailfish. The size of the sailfish have been quite varied. We caught a few 20 – 30 pounds sails as well as some 60 – 70 pounds fish. Both the goggle eyes on the kite as well as the pilchards on the flatlines have been getting their fair share of bites.
The blackfin tunas seemed to have moved north a bit, but I did hear of a few blackfins caught in the Keys. These fish will push their way north, and we should be seeing this wave of fish any day now. Most boats though are still catching one or two blackfins a day.
On the night fishery, tarpon action still remains good, although time is quickly running out. Swordfishing on the other hand has been off. This past quarter moon has been difficult. We had one trip last week that we didn’t even get one bite. This seems to have been the case for every boat that I’ve talked to. Not to worry though, the upcoming new moon all the way through the full moon should heat things up quite well. I would imagine that by next week, the swordfish bite will be back on.
With that being said, next week we have a few day trips, a few swordfish trips and then it’s off to Bimini for 3 days. We’ll keep you posted when I get back.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
